6 Pack Deep
This Party Called Life

image

I first heard about 6 Pack Deep from some show advertisements in the New Orleans area, but they were always playing over an hour away. They asked to be my friend on MySpace, so I figured I should check out the kinda jams these guys were laying down. I was more than impressed, and needless to say I approved the request. I had to have a friend from New Orleans send me the tracks from their five track demo, This Party Called Life. The energy and lyrics from this demo portray a fun-loving and talented group of guys who are willing to speak their minds no matter how vile and unorthodox their opinions might be.

The first tune, “Down South,” is pretty much 6PD’s theme song, boasting chorus lyrics of “Hands up! ‘Cause we're partying down South; tilt your drinks back and you'll see what we're about. People in the back, make your way up front; 6 Pack Deep's what you're about to confront.” Combining precise and infectious horn lines from their 3 trombone, tenor sax, and trumpet horn section with an extremely tight rhythm section and lyrics spat with spastic intensity, these guys have found a unique formula. Not only is the tune musically awesome, but it’s also danceable and fun – a great kickoff track for the demo. The next track, “Live to Die,” starts with a high energy rock groove that’s intensified with tons of articulate horn lines, which are something rarely perfected by a local band. 6 Pack Deep has no problem making it sound easy. The vocals aren’t as perfect, but you almost ignore the imperfections with hilarious and shameless lyrics like “life without sex isn’t life to me,” and “I don’t really care what drinking and smoking will cause at the age of 83.” Their drummer, Jeff Fountain, throws in a really cool and well played interlude that builds the intensity of the track. “Hangover Remedy” starts with a laidback ska groove, which their horns throw another catchy and precise horn line over. The vocals are really exposed in this style and get a little bit tedious, but the lyrics are really good, presenting their lead vocalist’s version of a hangover cure. Trumpet and bass solos help this song to standout as one of the musical highlights of the disc. “12 O’Clock Rock” starts off with Deftones-styled vocals and another excellent horn line. The verse has rapped vocals combined with a ska groove, which comes a little unexpectedly, but contrasts the rest of the demo to make it unique. There are even turn tables in one of the breakdowns, another element that 6PD has hidden up their sleeves. The last track, “Damn the Man,” follows the trend of the rest of the disc, boasting another awesome horn line and more amusing lyrics. The song is basically a message to the vocalist’s boss, telling him to “f*ck off,” and that he has a small phallic member. I’m LOLing as I write this. Basically every song on this demo is something that I’ve wanted to write at some point in my life, but never had the balls to. Thank you 6 Pack Deep for having little shame and the musical prowess to have your messages heard by thousands.

I definitely cannot wait to get back down South to check these guys out in person. The energy and articulation of This Party Called Life presents a unique style that will definitely get 6 Pack Deep’s name out nationwide. They’ve been expanding their touring radius, so hopefully they’ll have the ability to make it up North at some point soon. This Party Called Life can be bought online here, so definitely check it out.
