My Heart to Joy at the Same To
Heavenly Bodies

When Greg from Triumph of Life Records asked me to review the My Heart to Joy... EP, I jumped at the opportunity to critique a band that I’ve been hearing a good amount of praise about in the local music scene.  When I listened to the EP, I was pleasantly surprised to take a liking to a genre of music that I normally don’t think much about.  This EP is very interesting, very loud and full of emotion.

The first song, “Ethics” starts the EP out with brutal vocals and a slew of loud and sporadic instrumentation.  Gang vocals yelling “I watched as the heavens fell to the dirt” over and over again add a sense of extreme urgency to this already short and powerful song.  Immediately after, the song “That Ungodly Arch-Villain Voltaire is Dead” starts up with a soft and mellow guitar intro, eventually leading into absolute chaos when the rest of the instruments and singer kick in.  Interesting guitar and drum work over a very fast tempo runs this song on pure adrenaline until the half time section kicks in.  The vocals in this section sound especially emotional - the singer has something to say and he’s gonna let everyone know about it.  “I Think You Woke the Dead” follows, another fast and sporadic song featuring evil sounding guitar parts leading up to a sudden stop of an ending.

“Sirens” is next, a song that like the second track starts off with mellow guitar which eventually skyrockets into a frenzy of noise and emotion.  Sinister guitar melodies and drum rolls eventually carry this song to another abrupt ending, which fits this song’s energy perfectly.  The next song on the album is called “Can You Feel it, Captain Compost? ”  This is definitely the most melodic and one of the least chaotic song on the album, but it still captures the band’s fast and urgent characteristics that they have solidified throughout the album.  The last track, “True Levellers” starts off with a truly heart wrenching guitar played over a building drum roll and pounding bass. When the song kicks in, it is slower than anything else on the album but just as energetic and emotional. I feel like the bass on this EP hasn’t been a focal point yet, so I was happy to hear a small bass break towards the end if this song.

Heavenly Bodies is an EP that is jam packed with emotion and interesting instrumentation and vocals.  The band’s energy is incredible from start to finish, only slowing down from time to time for mellow guitar breaks.  This is a great EP that I’m very glad I had the chance to listen to and review.  Check out the store at tolrecords.com and myspace.com/triumphofliferecords to pick up this EP and help out Triumph of Life Records
