Edit: Just listening to BTMI/O Pioneers, and I think you need higher quality MP3s and VBR and
Oh yeah, I meant to add something along these lines:
Jeff: Good CD ripper that's free for non-commercial use (releasing free music is non-commercial right?). Being free is so punx. You'll need the   encoder which is also free, but can't be bundled with the program, the setup links you to   almost directly so I won't bother searching for it.
Exact Audio Copy is free, but it's also Windows only, and closed source.
Oh fiddlesticks.
Technically it's still following QUQ tradition, you don't get masters/source files for songs, just the finished product.

Or am I just a gigantic boob?

About lossless/etc Three Cheers - Just get one of the guys here who has a decent upload/the physical CD to get the ball rolling, and Jeff just adds the .torrent to QUQ later when things are going smooth already, so there's no whining from faggots not getting 6,345,021,998,232 kb/sec

I could prolly do it myself (for the VBR version), but I don't own the CD, just have something thanks to MegaUpload >_>

...Unless Jeff was intending to source the audio files from masters or whatever (I know fuck all about recording/mixing, closest I've been involved was holding a mic up under a drum set for a friend's band) resulting in slightly better quality

ringtones

I'm actually supposed to make Sara a ringtone that's the beginning of the BTMI version of If Assholes...

I should probably do that.  I told her I would like six months ago.

So QUQ kinda is based around this whole community aspect of music, as opposed to the whole big money riaa shizz-  You know, the whole "do it for the music, man!" mentality. Additionally, the community-minded aspect is coupled with the whole make use of the internet - myspace, downloads, etc. So why not advance this with torrents and wikis? Make the QUQ site a wiki, fans can upload recordings, lyrics, edit song meanings, band history, etc. Second, torrents develop a sort of community like oink did once upon a time. Why not try it with QUQ?

This sounds like a really cool idea, and the booklet things. I was pretty disappointed with the Get Warmer booklet, which lacked all the stuff you wrote online, and any incentive to actually buy the thing apart from some silly doodles.

who brought the dick?

seriously though, guys, i'm cleaning this topic up a bit to keep positive ideas up here and "ringtones" ideas out. i'll post something here later on tonight in response to responses. yeah!

OK...

RE: a handful of things. the new quote unquote site will definitely have a VERY BRIEF resources section. punk rock isn't really about copying, moreso about taking ideas further. for example, regardless of the fact that i don't really have the time to do things like tab out every song, it's a good excuse to build your ear. it's a good excuse to figure out how to make something on your own creatively in your own way. reading instructions isn't punk.

as far as releasing more music goes, we're extremely selective and mainly work with people who we know personally beforehand. if we just put out everything i don't think our label would be very good. there is a website called the internet audio archive however where you can upload all of your music for free and share it with your friends. I think we will soon implement a message board on our website where people can share music they've written and talk about it.

quote unquote will always be a strictly digital label. all the bands may be encouraged to go make physical copies of them and even sell them, but we won't ever have a store. we have links currently to the physical product on the page of certain albums. i found it interesting that someone said we should give a choice to consumers. i find it necessary to stress that the whole point of this thing is that you aren't consumers. you're people. the real choice you have is whether or not you want to listen to it. after that, there is a choice whether or not you'd like to donate and support the artists financially, share it with your friends, go to shows and have a good time, book the bands when they're coming to your town, and even to buy the vinyl/CDs in stores or mailorder them if the bands decide to make them available like that. punk rock has been "consumer-oriented" long enough shit!

we are going to start adding digital liner notes for records,  -encoded MP3s, torrented FLAC files, more videos, a tour page - that'll come with fixing the interface which starts to get clunky after have more than seven records on there.

as far as the release schedule next year, there will be a release of all the bomb the music industry! odds and ends stuff, asob's three cheers for disappointment, a rick johnson rock and roll machine full band EP, an o pioneers EP, a chotto ghetto EP, a Pegasuses-XL EP and full lengths from Let Me Crazy and Laura Stevenson as well as material yet to be determined... we're working on potentially adding some tour videos or maybe even movies/documentary-ish-things.

as far as THIS year goes we're VERY excited to be releasing the CHEEKY EP this Christmas. Cheeky is an amazing female-fronted pop-punk band from brooklyn/LI, and they have a song from "Choke on a Cheeseburger" streaming on their myspace right now.

I would like to thank everyone for their comments, especially the ones that didn't read like complaints but rather read like suggestions. Remember that in the end, we're just doing our thing and at the end of the day we're gonna do it our way - the real power lies in the fact that what we do is extremely simple and you could do the very same, and with some effort, probably better than us. So fuckin' go for it, and have a good holiday ya'll.

p.s. i have NO idea how to make a wiki, nor do I really have the time to set something like that up if it takes more than twenty minutes, but it sounds like a good idea. i don't even really know what a wiki is. any further information on what it is?

A wiki- like wikipedia. Anyone can add a new page or edit an existing page and cross link. Essentially its a website where the webmaster isnt in control and the users all make the content and edit and re-edit content and through the anarchy of it comes a nice source of content. wikipedia is the obvious example. When it comes to making one, i have no clue how, but we all use bulletin boards online and listen to shitty bands and suck in social situations so the rules of probability say that at least one btmi fan must now the details of making one.

cool stuff.

just wondering why a wiki? would that be for band pages and members and stuff? because I feel like they'd know more about themselves than we would.

tabs, links to various recordings, documenting variations, histories of songs, blah blah etc.
I was thinking it'd be cool to have something like the tom waits library (http://www.tomwaitslibrary.com/), put together by fans and shizz. but its all on you guys.

I want to see a section similar to the "Testimonials" section on the myspace, where people's complaints/whining/actual props can be posted. perhaps this can be implemented on the forthcoming message board, so that the rest of us can have the opportunity to ridicule in comments.
